Nonetheless, sisterly solidarity is alive and flourishing, as a force for life and as a way of challenging oppressive legislation. The narrator of this story, from his masculine perspective, fails to appreciate the complexity of the relationship between the sisters. He regards their solidarity as a threat to the social order. Moreover, he is not aware that they are competing over a limited resource—the love of a man, namely him. As the story unfolds, the older sister also experiences love, and thus she, too, tastes life in all its vitality.

At night he would fall into bed as exhausted as a day laborer in the fields and as calm as a baby at the breast. The days passed, and eventually he gave in. “I’ll just come with everyone else,” he soothed his conscience. “After all, she doesn’t know that I had planned to come early. ” That night he felt drawn to his learning; an explanation that had long eluded him nearly took shape. He took his notebook and climbed atop the roof. The night was dark and clear, with stars shining in honor of him and his Torah.

There is something unpolished in his movements. At times he is playful like a young boy; at other times he is silent like an old man. His presence brings new energy to the study house. The teachings they study somehow seem different, new, as if those who speak them are finally able to free themselves of old ideas and prior notions. “Come on, Reish Lakish, give us your read,” the older students urge him. The younger ones want to see his scars. They ask him to tell them about hunting and wait patiently to hear him speak.
